greetings all,
Version 4.0 of Smokeview is now ready for
testing. It may be downloaded from the web site http://fire.nist.gov/fds/svtest .
I'm calling this an "alpha" test release because I plan on adding a few more
features including 1) virtual touring allowing one to move along
an arbitrary path, 2) data chopping - specify a min chop and max chop value
and Smokeview will NOT draw data outside of these bounds, a nice way to
visualize ceiling jets. As always your comments are welcome so keep them
coming, identifying problems and suggesting new features.
The notable new feature in Smokeview 4.0 is a new
more realistic method for visualizing smoke. The calculation/visualization
dichotomy between FDS and Smokeview is now blurring as the 3D smoke option
requires a simple radiation calculation. The above web site shows an
image and movie illustrating the smoke and gives a sample FDS data file you can
use to generate the files Smokeview 4.0 needs to view it. The downside (or
upside if you want a new computer) is that this option requires a computer with
a lot of memory (1 gigabyte would not be too much) and a fast video
card. One area of feedback is to find out how well your
computers display the 3D smoke (in terms of frame rates) for the simple plume
example given at the web site above.
