Perhaps the choice of words may not have been the best, as "defunct"
can imply "no longer operative," "invalid," or "extinct." This is
certainly not the case here.

The JAMA library was a demonstration project, whose success and
sustained interest has far exceeded our expectations. We gave the
source code to the public so everyone could benefit. Years later, we
are continually pleased to see its algorithms and interfaces being
adopted in commercial and research applications. While it is true
that the JAMA authors have since moved on to other things, a few of
them still monitor this mailing list, and continue to provide comments
as time permits.
