Subject: Summer School in Portugal
There will be a summer school on "Orthogonal Polynomials and Special
Functions" in Portugal from July 14 to July 26, 2003 at the Universidade de
Coimbra. The theme of this summer school is "Approximation and Iteration".
This is the next summer school in a series; The first was the school in
Laredo, Spain, in 2000, the second in Inzell, Germany, 2001, and the third
in Leuven, Belgium, in 2002.
The goal of the Summer School is to give four introductory courses in
advanced research topics on orthogonal polynomials, approximation and
iteration theory. Some free discussions and some informal seminars will
also be available. The expected audience are graduate and recent
postgraduate students as well as young active researchers. The topics to be
considered will be:
Orthogonal Polynomials
Approximation Theory
Iteration theory
Matrix moment problems
Birth and death processes
Integral Transforms
Number Theory
The local organizing committee for this summer school consists of
Amílcar Branquinho, Departamento de Matemática da Universidade de
Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal (ajplb@mat.uc.pt)
Ana Foulquié, Departamento de Matemática da Universidade de Aveiro,
Aveiro, Portugal (foulquie@mat.ua.pt)

Invitation to a Conference on Orthogonal Functions And Related Topics
Olav Njastad will turn 70 next year, and will retire from his professorship
in Trondheim as of January 1, 2003. In his honor there will be a conference
in Roros, Norway in the week of August 11 - 16. 2003. Roros is an old
historic town not far from Trondheim. It is on UNESCO's World Heritage
list. Please respond to lisa@math.ntnu.no by January 31, 2003 if you want
to receive further information.

Subject: Copenhagen Open Problem Session
As you probably know, the Scientific Committee of the 7th International
Symposium on Orthogonal Polynomials, Special Functions and Applications,
(OPSFA) to be held in Copenhagen, during August 2003 (see OP-SF NET 8.6,
Topic #7, OP-SF NET 9.4, Topic #6) has charged me with organizing the
"Open Problem Session" of the meeting.
To this end, I hope you are interested in participating in this session.
If you have a good problem to present, you could prepare a (maximum) 10--15
minutes talk containing a presentation of the scientific background of the
problem and your conjectures about a possible solution.
If you agree with this proposal, please send me at your earliest
convenience (but not later than June 30, 2003), a short confirmation e-mail
message, in order I can have an idea about the number of contributors.
