Topic #1 ------------- OP-SF NET --------------- December 22, 1993
From: Tom H. Koornwinder
Subject: Introducing the first issue of OP-SF Net
The Newsletter of the SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials
and Special Functions is mailed quarterly to members of the Group.
Besides news of general interest, it contains a combination of brief
announcements and short articles, and we believe it plays an important
role in communicating about our field. As a complement to the
Newsletter we are beginning an electronic news net, called OP-SF Net,
in line with the other SIAM news nets. This net will allow rapid
distribution of important news items to those members on the Internet.
As with other nets, nonmembers may also receive the transmissions
after filling out an informal application that will follow their
request.
All workers in the area of special functions and orthogonal
polynomials are urged to contribute to the OP-SF Net. We seek
announcements of meetings and conferences, new software relevant to
our field, forthcoming books, electronic archives, interesting
research questions, job openings, and so on. To start with we ask
that contributions be limited to 30 lines each but this can be
flexible. There will certainly be some overlap with the Newsletter
and, in any case, all items in the OP-SF Net will appear in the next
edition of the Newsletter (unless the activity has already taken
place), while many news items appearing first in the Newsletter will
also be included in the subsequent News Net transmission.
One big difference between the News Net and the Newsletter will be the
amount of editing of submitted material. Material for the Net should
preferably reach me in a form immediately suitable for transmitting.
If there is any editing, it will only be light. Occasionally, if any
news reaches me in hardcopy of which I think it is suitable for
dissemination, then I will include it in the Net, but some editing
will be unavoidable then. In this first issue there is more material
of this kind than I expect for future issues.
Of course, the success of the OP-SF net will depend on your
contributions. To begin with, we plan to transmit the OP-SF Net eight
times a year but this is also flexible, depending on the interest and
amount of material received.
Tentatively, contributions to the second issue should reach the email
address poly@siam.org before February 1, 1994.

Subject: Stieltjes centennial lectures at Dutch Mathematical Congress
The 100th anniversary of T.J. Stieltjes' premature death will be
commemorated in 1994-95. A number of activities are planned in The
Netherlands (Leiden and Delft), and in France (Toulouse).
First of all, on April 7 and 8, 1994 the annual Congress of the
Wiskundig Genootschap (Dutch Mathematical Society) will be held in
Leiden, where the following lectures related to the Stieltjes
centennial will be given.
R. Askey (Madison): The continuing impact of the work of
Stieltjes

Topic #4 ------------- OP-SF NET --------------- December 22, 1993
From: Marcel .G. de Bruin
Subject: Thomas Stieltjes Conference, Delft, 1994
Orthogonality, Moment Problems and Continued Fractions
an international conference in honour of
Thomas Jan Stieltjes Jr. (1856-1894)
October 31 - November 4, 1994
Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands
First announcement and call for papers
To commemorate the death of Th.J. Stieltjes Jr. in 1894, the Technical
University Delft will host a conference in his honour in the fall of
1994. It is the intention to devote each day to a different aspect of
the work of Stieltjes as indicated in the tentative schedule given
below.
To this end the local organizers will invite, advised by the
International Scientific Committee, one lecturer for each of the days.
Moreover there will be short lectures (30 minutes) on `the subject of
the day', to be delivered in a plenary session.
Because no parallel sessions will be planned, the number of short
communications is restricted! To monitor the scientific level of the
contributions, acceptance of papers will be decided upon by the
International Scientific Committee; the decision will be made on the
basis of an extended abstract (2 pages A4 at most). Publication as a
special issue of a mathematical journal might be decided upon.
Those interested in participating are invited to indicate this by
sending an e-mail message to
tjs94@twi.tudelft.nl
or by sending a letter to
TJS94, Mekelweg 4, kr. H4.11
Department of Pure Mathematics
Delft University of Technology
P.O. Box 5031
2600 GA Delft, The Netherlands
A reaction is expected before January 10, 1994. Those, having
indicated their interest in participation will receive a second
announcement describing procedures for registration and submission of
manuscripts.
Tentative Schedule and Organisation
Each of Monday (October 31st), Tuesday (November 1st), Thursday
(November 3rd) and Friday (November 4th) will be dedicated to a
different subject, with an invited lecture in the morning, followed by
short communications; the subjects are (precise day not fixed yet)
continued fractions, rational approximation
moment problems
orthogonal polynomials, asymptotics
properties of zeros, Gaussian quadrature
On Wednesday (November 2nd), there will be an invited lecture about
the life and work of Thomas Jan Stieltjes Jr. in the morning; after
lunch a sightseeing tour is planned.
The selection of the invited lectures and the short communications
will be supervised by the International Scientific Committee:
W.J. Van Assche (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
G. van Dijk(Rijksuniversiteit Leiden)
J.-B. Hiriart-Urruty (Universit\'e Paul Sabatier, Toulouse)
F. Marcellan (Unviversidad Carlos III de Madrid, Legan\'es)
P. Nevai (The Ohio State University, Columbus)
M.G. de Bruin (Technische Universiteit Delft)
Members of the Local Organizing Committee are (in alphabetical order):
H. Bavinck, M.G. de Bruin, R. Koekoek, H.G. Meijer,

Subject: Activity on Representation Theory and q-Special Functions
The Thomas Jan Stieltjes Research Institute is a newly-organized
inter-university mathematical research center which is physically
spread over the mathematics departments of the participating

for a longer or shorter time, and regular seminars will be held. The
focus will be on Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions associated
with root systems, and interpretations of Macdonald's orthogonal
$q$-polynomials on quantum groups. The activity will take place both
at the Universities of Leiden and Amsterdam.
The following have agreed to come for a period of two to eight weeks:
Ivan V. Cherednik (Chapel Hill), Charles F. Dunkl (Charlottesville),

From: Tom H. Koornwinder
Subject: New journal "Integral Transforms and Special Functions"
A new journal "Integral transforms and special functions" has appeared
first in 1993.
Aims and scope: Integral transformations and special functions belong
to the basic subjects of mathematical analysis, the theory of
differential and integral equations, approximation theory, and to many
other areas of pure and applied mathematics. Although centuries old
these subjects are under intensive development, being necessary in
various problems of modern mathematics and other disciplines. This
stimulates continuous interest for researchers in these fields. The
aim of "Integral transforms and Special Functions" is to foster
further growth by providing a journal for publication of important
research on all aspects of the subjects.

From: Nico M. Temme
Subject: New journal "Methods and Applications of Analysis"
The first issue of the journal "Methods and Applications of Analysis"
will appear in January 1994.
Aims and scope: "Methods and Applications of Analysis" will publish
high quality mathematical papers treating that part of analysis which
has direct or potential applications to the biological and physical
sciences and engineering. Topics from analysis include approximation
theory, asymptotic analysis, calculus of variations, integral
equations, integral transforms, ordinary and partial differential
equations, perturbation methods, and special functions. The primary
aim of the journal is to encourage the development of new techniques
and results in applied analysis. Papers which simply apply existing
methods to the natural sciences and engineering or merely generalize
classical results for the purpose of abstraction are outside the scope
of this journal. Also papers primarily in the computing sciences will
not be considered. All papers will be in English.

An alternative implementation has been produced by Tom Koornwinder,
