Topic #1 ---------------- OP-SF NET --------------- August 2, 1994
From: Martin Muldoon <muldoon@nexus.yorku.ca>
Subject: Report from San Diego

The 1994 Annual Meeting of SIAM took place at the Sheraton
Harbor Island East, San Diego, California during July 25-29.

The varied and interesting program included several invited addresses,
minisymposia, contributed papers and award presentations. The latter
included the John von Neumann Lecture "Surreal Numbers" by Martin D.
Kruskal and the award of a George Polya Prize to Gregory V. Chudnovsky
followed by a joint talk "Fast Computational Methods in Pure and
Applied Mathematics" by Gregory and his brother David.

A feature of the meeting was an increased number of sessions on
education in applied mathematics. There were the usual exhibits of
books and software and a Poster-Video session combined with a
reception on the first evening.

Our Activity Group organized a successful Minisymposium
"Special Functions and Asymptotics" with talks by Roderick Wong, Adri
Olde Daalhuis, Mark Dunster, Frank Stenger, Richard Askey, Bruce
Berndt, Ronald Evans, George Gasper, Audrey Terras, Jeff Geronimo,
Renato Spigler and Andre Ronveaux. Summaries of their presentations
will be given in our Newsletter.

The announced business meeting of our Activity Group did not take
place, because too few people showed up. However, some organisational
matters were discussed informally. The question of our sponsorship of
a Minisymposium at ICIAM '95 (Hamburg) will be decided soon.

Among the contributed paper sessions in San Diego was one on "Applied
Analysis; Asymptotics and Special Functions" with seven talks.

The program of the meeting was dedicated to I. Edward Block on the
occasion of his retirement as managing director of SIAM.

The next Annual Meeting will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina,
October 23-26, 1995 (and not in Louisville, as announced earlier). The
1996 Annual Meeting will be held in Kansas City, Missouri in mid-July.

Topic #2 ---------------- OP-SF NET --------------- August 2, 1994
From: Charles F. Dunkl <cfd5z@fermi.clas.virginia.edu>
Subject: Service by SIAM Headquarters

In addition to Martin Muldoon's report from San Diego, Charles Dunkl
(chair of our Activity Group) writes:

There have been communications from members expressing dissatisfaction
with SIAM Headquarters: items such as incorrect mail, e-mail, phone
listings in the membership list, failure to send issues of the
Newsletter even though the person is listed in the membership list,
delayed action on adding names. Also there may be some complaint about
the scheduling: the group's minisymposium with 12 speakers from
several countries was booked into relatively small lecture rooms (at
the same time as some "contributed programs" of 10-minute talks
enjoyed the use of much larger rooms). Also our program was at the end
and so there was no coffee service on Friday afternoon and attendance
was low. One could interpret this as a lack of regard for activity
groups. The chair suggests that members may wish to individually write
to SIAM officers, for example, Bart Ng, to request more and better
service by the HQ staff for the group. Of course members can send
corrections to the officers of the group and they will communicate
with HQ.

Topic #3 ---------------- OP-SF NET --------------- August 2, 1994
From: Patrick J. Van Fleet
Subject: Sam Houston conference canceled

In OP-SF Net 1.2, Topic #6 an announcement was made of a proposed
conference on Special Functions at Sam Houston State University on
August 25-27. The organizers Patrick J. Van Fleet and Peter R.
Massopust now write to everybody who showed interest the following:

Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain adequate funding to sponsor
such a conference this year. Our department came up with a generous
amount (considering our current O&M budget!), but we were still in
need of funding from an outside agency. We were unsuccessful in our
attempts to obtaining such funding.

We would like to thank you for your interest in such a conference and
we hope to try in the future to possibly sponsor such a conference.
We apologize for the late notification, but we continued to pursue
other possibilities in hopes of funding the conference. Such was not
the case.

Topic #4 ---------------- OP-SF NET --------------- August 2, 1994
From: G. van Dijk <vandijk@rulcri.leidenuniv.nl>
Subject: T. Oshima giving Kloosterman lecture in Leiden

During the months September and October 1994 Prof. T. Oshima
(University of Tokyo, Japan) will stay as a guest professor at the
Mathematics Department of the University of Leiden, Netherlands. He
will be the Kloosterman professor at Leiden for 1994.

On September 9, 14:30-16:00 hours, he will deliver the Kloosterman
lecture on the subject:

"Completely integrable quantum systems with coordinate symmetries"

Abstract:
Commuting families of differential operators are important at least in
two fields of mathematics: the theory of integrable systems and the
theory of representations (and special functions). Such differential
operators often have some symmetries. We want to study and construct
completely integrable quantum systems with certain coordinate
symmetries.

In subsequent weeks prof. Oshima will teach a course on
"Systems of differential equations invariant under a group action".
Further information can be obtained from G. van Dijk
<vandijk@rulcri.leidenuniv.nl>

Topic #5 ---------------- OP-SF NET --------------- August 2, 1994

Special Function Theory have appeared:

Topic #6 ---------------- OP-SF NET --------------- August 2, 1994
From: Activity Group Newsletter, Summer 1994
Subject: New book on Hermite and Laguerre expansions

"Lectures on Hermite and Laguerre Expansions" is the title of a 1993
book by Sunduram Thangavelu, published by Princeton University Press.
>From the preface:
"This work deals with three types of expansions: 1) Hermite functions,
2) special Hermite functions, 3) Laguerre functions. For each type
there are two basic questions: a) is the series convergent or summable
in the L^p norm or almost everywhere for any L^p function? b) is a
multiplier transform bounded on L^p if the multiplier satisfies a
standard H\"ormander condition, and if so how many derivatives are
required? The results described in this work give a coherent account
of what might be called the concrete Littlewood-Paley theory for a
class of (related) expansions."
