From: Martin Muldoon <muldoon@mathstat.yorku.ca>
Subject: Sponsoring a minisymposium at ICIAM '95 (Hamburg)
Tentatively, the following minisymposium at ICIAM Hamburg will be
sponsored by our Activity Group.
ICIAM 95, Hamburg, July 3-7, 1995
Minisymposium "Orthogonal Polynomials and Spectral Methods"
Classification No.: 102
Organizers: Francisco Marcellan (EPS Carlos III, Madrid, Spain) and
Andre Ronveaux (Facultes Universitaires N.D. de la Paix, Namur, Belgium)
Description:
There has been much recent research on orthogonality with respect to
Sobolev inner products. The analysis of spectral problems for
ordinary differential operators, the asymptotic estimates for the
corresponding eigenfunctions as well as the location and properties of
their zeros constitute some new directions in this research. These
methods can be used in the design of pseudospectral methods for the
discretization of parabolic partial differential equations as well as
for the design of efficient algorithms for approximation by
polynomials in the underlying Sobolev space.
Speakers:
Arieh Iserles, University of Cambridge, England: (Tentative title)
"Sobolev-orthogonal polynomials and pseudospectral methods for
parabolic PDE's"
Walter van Assche, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium:
"Direct and inverse problems for Sobolev orthogonal polynomials"
Marcel de Bruin, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands:
"Sobolev-orthogonal polynomials and their zeros".
Other speakers to be announced.

1995 is one of the main events organized during the academic year
1994-1995 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Thomas
J. Stieltjes (on December 31,1894, in Toulouse). The topics covered by
this conference will highlight later developments in topics on which
Stieltjes has worked, more specifically: continued fractions and
orthogonal polynomials; measures on the real line, moment problems;
Laplace, Fourier, Stieltjes transforms; approximation, quadratures.

T.W. Korner: Via measures to universal Fourier series.
J. Korevaar: Electrostatic fields due to distribution of electrons
H. Stahl: Pade approximants to algebraic functions.
Furthermore there will be contributed lectures. Abstracts of at most
two pages have to be sent before November 1, 1994 to the local
