APPLIED and NUMERICAL ANALYSIS
The Centre de recherches mathematiques is hosting a year long program
in applied and numerical analysis in 1995-1996. The year's activities
will be devoted to the following subjects: applications to hydrodyna-
mics, the mathematics of finance, and recent developments and methods
(wavelets, neural networks, special functions). Elements of the program
are organized jointly with the Centre de recherche en calcul applique
(CERCA) or with the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse
des organisations (CIRANO). The CRM Summer School, which will again be
held in Banff, Alberta during the month of August, is part of the theme
year. Following is a schedule of events:

Two workshops are planned for this period, one entitled Theory of Non-
linear Special Functions: The Painleve Transcendents (May 13-18) and the

Subject: Celebration of Gabor Szego in Hungary
Gabor Szego (in diacritical TeX notation written as G\'abor Szeg\H{o})
was born on January 20, 1895 in Kunhegyes, Hungary, so the enthusiastic
citizens of this small town organized a a little celebration on
January 21, 1995, which was endorsed and co-organized by the Janos Bolyai
Society and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Paul Nevai attended the celebration and reported on it.

Below follows a very short extract I have made from Paul's report.

During the morning session there were four speeches about Szego's
life by the following speakers:

- Dick Askey (translated into Hungarian and read by Gyuri Petruska)

The talks by Askey and Lorch are included in Paul Nevai's full account.
After lunch the participants went to see the Szego exhibit in the basement
of the City Library.
The afternoon session consisted of a few 15 minutes talks about
Szego's influence on Hungarian mathematics. It was organized by Gabor
Halasz. The speakers were Gabor Halasz, Gyuri Petruska, Paul Nevai,
and Peter Vertesi. Topics ranged over inequalities, power series,
Szego's theory, interpolation, etc.

These are the notes from a series of lectures the author gave at
Harvard University in the Fall of 1994. The goal of these lectures is
to give a self-contained exposition of a recent result of I.
Cherednik, who proved I.G. Macdonald's inner product conjectures for
arbitrary root systems, using the algebraic structure he called
"double affine Hecke algebra". In order to make these lectures
understandable to a general mathematical audience, the author gives
all necessary definitions (including that of Macdonald's polynomials,
Hecke algebras, etc.) and motivations in the course. However,
familiarity with (finite-dimensional and affine) root systems and Weyl
groups is assumed.
The author gives much credit to earlier lecture courses on the subject by
Ivan Cherednik, Howard Garland and Ian Macdonald.

Abstract:
This research note presents a systematic study of the common zeros of
sets of polynomials in several variables which are related to higher
dimensional quadrature (often called cubature). Just like the classical
Gaussian quadrature formula, a cubature formula of degree 2n-1 needs at
least N nodes, where N denotes the dimension of the subspace of
polynomials of degree at most n-1. A cubature formula whose number of
nodes is equal to N exists if, and only if, the corresponding orthogonal
polynomials of degree n have N real and distinct common zeros. However,
since such a cubature does not exist in general, one is led to study
cubature formulae with more nodes, the most interesting cases being the
ones with a minimal number of nodes.
In the recent development of orthogonal polynomials in several
variables, the common zeros of orthogonal polynomials are characterized
as the joint eigenvalues of a family of block Jacobi matrices defined
through the coefficient matrices of a three-term relation in
vector-matrix form. The main results in this book show that, in general,
cubature formulae are based on the real and distinct common zeros of a
family of quasi-orthogonal polynomials, and the existence of these common
zeros can be characterized through the solvability of certain nonlinear
matrix equations derived from the modified block Jacobi matrices.
The approach is parallel to that of one variable, which differs
significantly from earlier ones based on the algebraic ideal theory.
The book is in essence a research paper; a good portion of the
theorems are new and, in many cases, new proofs are given for known
results. The content is basically self-contained, including one
section that summarizes the recent results on the general structure of
orthogonal polynomials in several variables.

in any convenient form, for example as a textfile or as a typewritten
manuscript. Items containing substantial mathematical symbols must be
submitted as a standard Latex file by e-mail or by disc. There is only
one exception: plain TeX files can be accepted by making special
arrangements with the Editor. AmsTeX and AmsLatex files cannot be
accepted. Whatever the content of your Latex article, you must use a
certain preamble which can be obtained by e-mail from the Editor.
