From: Stamatis Koumandos <skoumand@ucy.ac.cy>
Subject: Conference on Fourier and Complex Analysis
Preliminary Announcement
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics
of the University of Cyprus will organize an
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FOURIER AND COMPLEX ANALYSIS:
CLASSICAL PROBLEMS - CURRENT VIEW
MAY 6-11, 2006
PROTARAS, CYPRUS
The main theme of the conference is the state of classical problems in
Fourier and Complex Analysis today and the stimulus they provide for the
interaction between researchers working in different branches of
Analysis.
The following mathematicians will participate with an invited talk:
M. Andersson (Goteborg), C. Berenstein (College Park), C. Berg
(Copenhagen), K. Kazarian (Madrid), S. Konyagin (Moscow), A. Olevskii
(Tel-Aviv), A. Sebbar (Bordeaux), N. Tarkhanov (Potsdam), V. Totik
(Szeged), W. Trebels (Darmstadt), A. Tsikh (Krasnoyarsk). Further
invited
speakers are expected.
Due to the geographical position of Cyprus, the conference will be
organized as follows:
Arrival : Saturday, May 6, 2006 (most of the flights arrive late
afternoon or early evening).
Conference: May 7,8,9,10, 2006. Each morning session will consist of
three lectures by invited speakers (including breaks). In the early
afternoons there will be parallel sessions for short 20 minute
presentations (at most 4 talks in each session). One afternoon will be
free.
Departure: Thursday, May 11, 2006 (most flights depart in the morning).
We will be staying at the Hotel Tetyk, 50 meters from the sandy Protaras
beach. In early May the temperature is about 24-27 C. The complete
package (five nights in the hotel, half-board, two conference dinners,
related material, conference fees) will cost approximately 100 Cyprus
Pounds (about 172 Euro at the present exchange rate) for a single room
and about 90 Cyprus pounds (or 155 Euro) per person for a double room.
We expect to have special rates for the participants who wish to extend
their stay or/and for accompanying persons. More information will be
available on the web-page of the conference which will be opened (after
the First Announcement) by the end of September 2005.

Topic #2 ---------- OP-SF NET 12.4 ------------ July 15, 2005

From: OP-SF NET Editor <muldoon@yorku.ca>
Subject: "Liber Amicorum" for Nico Temme
Tom Koornwinder <thk@science.uva.nl> informs us of a "Liber Amicorum"
for Nico Temme, on the occasion of his official retirement from CWI. It
includes a very interesting account by Tom entitled "Nico Temme, the
Askey scheme and me, 1968-2005". This article contains a version of the
Askey scheme where all boxes are filled with pictures of the people for
whom the polynomials are named. There are also some interesting
pictures of Tom and Nico in earlier times. The paper is on the web, see
http://www.science.uva.nl/~thk/art/informal.html
Topic #3 ---------- OP-SF NET 12.4 ------------ July 15, 2005
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From: OP-SF NET Editor <muldoon@yorku.ca>
Subject: Surveys in Approximation Theory
This is from AT-NET BULLETIN NO. 129, 17.05.2005
This is to inform you about a project we have started called "Surveys in
Approximation Theory" (SAT). As the name suggests, this is meant to be a
collection of surveys in the area of approximation theory. It is
web-based and free.
Its main homepage is at:
http://www.math.technion.ac.il/sat/
SAT is not meant as a first-publication journal, nor a collection of
electronic monographs or textbooks. Instead, the survey articles we hope
to collect here are meant to review a topic while citing, explaining and
assessing the most relevant, important and interesting aspects of the
topic. We hope that, in this manner, SAT will provide a valuable and
unique service to the approximation theory and mathematical community.
Articles may be broad or narrow in scope. The essential requirements
are a well specified topic, together with clear exposition.
Articles will appear as they are ready. All articles will be peer
reviewed (refereed). Peer reviewing is essential in the maintenance of
high standards. No attempt will be made to speed up the refereeing
process at the cost of quality.
If you wish to submit an article, please confer with any one of us and
let us have a tentative title and a brief description of planned
contents.
If you would like to be notified of new papers accepted to SAT then
subscribe to the electronic mailing list.
We subscribe to the notion that mathematical research and exposition
should be freely available on-line. That should be the 21st century
meaning of the word "publication". This is one motivation for SAT.
This volume contains contributions from international experts on the
fields of Constructive Approximation. Constructive Approximation has
reached out to encompass the computational and approximation-theoretical
aspects of various interesting fields in Applied Mathematics such as
(multivariate) approximation methods, quasi-interpolation, and
approximation by (orthogonal) polynomials, as well as the modern
mathematical developments in neuro fuzzy approximation, RBF-networks,
industrial and engineering applications.
