Subject: Message from the Chair
Welcome to the lastest OPSF newsletter.
One of the major conferences in our field this summer was the
"International Conference on Difference Equations, Special Functions and
Applications", which was a joint meeting involving OPSFA, ICDEA and SIDE,
held in Munich in late July. Some reports on the meeting should appear
in the next newsletter. I would be grateful to hear comments about this
meeting, in particular from those of you attended the meeting; please
email them to me (P.A.Clarkson@kent.ac.uk). Would you like to see more
of these joint meetings in the future? Any suggestions about changes in
the format of such a meeting would also be welcome. For your
information, the next OPSFA meeting is due to be held in July 2007 in
Marseille, France; the next SIDE meeting is due to be held in July 2006
in Melbourne, Australia.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: Report from Santander meeting
Report on the conference "Special functions: Asymptotic Analysis and
Computation", in honor of Nico Temme's 65th Birthday, Santander, Spain,
4-6 July 2005
This was a mathematically interesting, and also a most enjoyable
conference. Nico Temme's achievements in special functions and
asymptotics are well-known: consider, for instance his many papers, his
book "Special Functions, An Introduction to the Classical Functions of
Mathematical Physics" (Wiley 1996), and his heavy involvement in the
preparation of the NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions. Because
Nico has reached the age of 65, he has officially retired from the CWI
(Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science) in Amsterdam, where he has
spent his whole professional life. The CWI had already organized a nice
farewell symposium "From here to infinity" and farewell party for Nico on
May 27, 2005. His Spanish collaborators and coauthors Amparo Gil and
Javier Segura (Santander) and Jose Luis Lopez (Pamplona), together with
Nico's former student Adri Olde Daalhuis (Edinburgh), had the good idea to
organize an international three-day conference in his honor in Spain. The
SIAM OPSF Activity Group acted as a co-sponsor of the conference.
The title "Special functions: Asymptotic Analysis and Computation"
reflected Nico's main interests in mathematics and
17 invited forty-minute speakers represented
Nico's major scientific contacts. Additionally, there were 13
contributed 20-minute talks and a few contributions to the poster
session. Altogether there were 56 registered participants. Let me
mention here the invited speakers, with some grouping in categories:
- Asymptotics: Kathy Driver, Wolfgang Gawronski, Carla Giordano,
Chris Howls, David Kaminski, Adri Olde Daalhuis, Richard Paris,
Roderick Wong
- Applications in physics and chemistry: Jonathan Connor, Jesus

Asymptotics in connection with special functions was evidently an
important focus of this conference. The state of the art could be heard
from leading researchers in this area. Dan Lozier had good news about
the DLMF project. It is approaching completion. Dan carried a draft of
all chapters with him for inspection by anyone interested.
The location of the conference was splendid. The lecture were held in a
building at Santander's beautiful waterfront with nice beaches overlooking
a small bay, and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. But temperatures were
only around 20 C (normal on Spain's northern coast in summer), there was
some rain, and the sea was very cold: you needed a wetsuit for swimming.
The social program included a reception in Santander's city hall and an
excursion to Santillana del Mar, where we were given a guided tour of the
old church and historic houses. The conference dinner was also held here.
There were some after-dinner speeches highlighting episodes from Nico's
scientific life.
The final address at the conference was by Nico himself. He recalled
some experiences during his career and lessons learned from them. He
thanked the speakers and organizers and made it clear that his official
retirement would not mean a retirement from research and publication.
This conference was a satellite meeting of the FoCM conference which
was held in Santander during June 30 - July 9. During the first three
afternoons of this FoCM conference a workshop was held on "Special
Functions and Orthogonal Polynomials", organized by Guillermo Lopez
and Ed Saff. Also during this workshop there were many interesting
lectures. As it turned out, there was a special focus on
Riemann-Hilbert problems in connection with special functions.

SIAM recently issued calls for nominations for several awards.
(1) SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of PDE Prize
The SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations
(SIAG/APDE) Prize, established in 2005, is awarded to the author(s) of
the most outstanding paper, as determined by the prize committee, on a
topic in Partial Differential Equations published in English in a
peer-reviewed journal within the four calendar years preceding the year
of the award. Nominations, including bibliographic citation and a
justification, should be submitted by December 31, 2005. For further
