FPKI support for SOA - Service Oriented Architectures

Since there will be an Federal PKI update on the coming PKI Workshop, may I put a question already?

SOA is something that is coming in a big way even within the Federal Government.
One of the prime characteristics of such schemes is that applications (servers) call other services over the Internet rather than only calling internal subroutines.

This puts new hard demands on security including authentication.

An obvious question is thus: In what way is the Federal PKI planning to support this new way of creating exciting applications?

It would be very nice to have some kind of answer to the PKI Workshop.

From the OASIS e-gov list I ripped the following originally submitted by Joseph Chiusano of  Booz Allen Hamilton:

ANNOUNCEMENT:

The US federal government has recently initiated a SOA Community of Practice (CoP[1]) under the Federal CIO Council. All are invited to participate in this effort. There are no restrictions whatsoever for participation (do not have to be based the US, do not have to be a US federal government employee or contractor, etc.). Come one, come all – the more the merrier.

There is also an e-mail forum archive [2] available for this CoP for those who would like to get a sense of the activity thus far (please keep in mind that we are just beginning this initiative, so the activity will grow over time).

More details below – please note the deadline of March 31st for a Call for Presentations for an upcoming conference that is described further below (“IMPORTANT NOTE #1”), as well as the conference call tomorrow (March 23rd) for the SOA demo (“IMPORTANT NOTE #2”).

Upcoming conference and Call For Presentations:

-          The SOA CoP is conducting a “SOA For E-Government” conference[3] in the Washington DC area on May 23rd-24th. Ron Schmelzer of ZapThink will be giving the opening keynote on May 23rd.

-          IMPORTANT NOTE #1: A Call for Presentations has recently been announced[4], with a deadline of March 31st.

SOA Demo:

-          The CoP has also recently undertaken the creation of a SOA demo[5] whose purpose is to demonstrate the business value and technical feasibility of SOA, with various scenarios involving an example “SOA Community” that collaborates to achieve a business goal. The demo will utilize OMG’s Model Driven Architecture (MDA) to model the community and produce WSDL-SOA interfaces.

-          IMPORTANT NOTE #2: A conference call for the SOA demo has just been set for tomorrow (Thur, March 23rd) at 11am US EST[6]. All are invited and encouraged to join.
