Microsoft to shoot Messenger in next update

re: http://news.com.com/2100-7355_3-5098603.html?tag=nefd_top

"Spam attacks and security vulnerabilities have prompted Microsoft to plan to turn off its troublesome Windows Messenger service in the next Windows XP update, a company representative said Tuesday."

This is a positive from my point of view.  For MS to disable technology rather than add more is an important milestone.  When a problem becomes known (that is, some code that is problematic for security), perhaps it is best to turn it off until we are confident we have a solution, rather than rush to patch.

Cheers,
Gary
