Re: NP for revision of ISO/IEC 11581-1

Upon reviewing the document, I don't think we should propose a work
package at this time.

The work package that Bill is going to propose should cover work that
should be done first.  Without doing that work first, it's not worth
opening up this document for revision.

This should include taking the models and methods used in documenting
terminology and applying these to creating a glossary and thesaurus of the
verbs these icons represent on the screen, together with the text labels
that are in use as synonyms for the icons.  There are 'function names' given
in the current document without definition.  These should be better defined.

However, in order to provide a firm foundation for the multi-lingual
extension of these language-independent signs with a range of language-
adaptive labels, we should have a better framework for assessing when
a label is or is not a good fit to the function involved, in the context
of a [IT service] delivery context where a variety of function
concepts must be remembered.

I believe that the methodology set out in

    + ISO 704:1987, Terminology work -- Principles and methods

    + ISO 10241:1992, International terminology standards -- Preparation
    and layout

Would be appropriate for this work and the NP should adhere to this.

Once the usage database above has been constructed, the parts of 11581
should all be amended to refer to it for guidance as to when a given
software action fits or does not fit the concept associated with the icon.
